Key insight: Ink cost is typically 1-5% of selling price. Material (blank product) is usually 20-40% of price. Labor is 10-20%. Ink is the smallest cost component — don't skimp on quality to save a few cents.
5 Ways to Reduce Ink Costs
1. Optimize white ink usage. White is the most expensive and most used. For light-colored materials, skip the white underbase (print CMYK directly). Only use white on dark/transparent materials. Use "white only where needed" mode in RIP software (not full-coverage white underbase).
2. Nest multiple items per print. Fill the entire print bed. Printing 12 phone cases at once uses less ink per case than printing one at a time (less white underbase waste, more efficient). Use nesting software.
3. Use correct print mode. Draft mode uses 30-50% less ink than production mode. For internal tests, drafts, or low-quality requirements, use draft mode. Only use high-quality mode for final products.
4. Buy ink in bulk. 1L bottles are cheaper per ml than 250ml or 500ml bottles. Buying 5L bulk saves 20-30%. But don't overstock — UV ink has 12-month shelf life.
5. Maintain the printer. A well-maintained printer wastes less ink: clean nozzles = less cleaning cycles (each cleaning wastes 5-20ml ink), no clogged heads = no wasted prints, proper calibration = no reprints due to misalignment. A clogged head can waste 50-100ml in cleaning cycles.
