Used Printing Machine: 7-Point Checklist Before Buying Second Hand
• What ink was used? (Brand, type — water-based, eco solvent, UV, sublimation)
• Is the ink system clean? Check for ink buildup, leaks, dried ink.
• Check ink tubes for: air bubbles, kinks, discoloration, cracks.
• Check dampers: squeeze gently. Should feel soft (full of ink). Hard = clogged. Empty = air in system.
• Check waste ink tank/absorber: is it full? (Full waste tank can cause ink backup and head damage.)
• For UV printers: check if UV ink has cured in lines (solid particles = bad).
• For DTF: check white ink system for sediment buildup.
Red flag: Mixed ink brands, ink system visibly dirty, air bubbles in multiple tubes.
Checklist Point 3: Mechanical Condition
How to check:
- Carriage movement: Turn off printer, manually move carriage left-right. Should move smoothly, no grinding, no sticking.
- Belts: Check timing belt for cracks, fraying, slack. A worn belt causes misalignment.
- Rails: Check carriage rails for scratches, rust, excessive wear. Should be clean and lightly lubricated.
- Motors: Turn on, listen for unusual noises (grinding, squealing, knocking).
- Paper/media feed: Test feeding. Should feed straight, no skewing, no jamming.
- Cables/wires: Check for frayed wires, loose connections, damaged cables.
- Casing/body: Check for cracks, dents, signs of being dropped.
Red flag: Grinding noises, carriage sticks, belt fraying, visible damage.
Checklist Point 4: Electronics and Firmware
How to check:
• Turn on printer. Does it boot normally? No error messages?
• Check control panel: all buttons work, display is clear.
• Connect to computer: does printer communicate? Can you send a test print?
• Check firmware version: is it up to date? Can it be updated?
• For UV printers: test UV LED lamps. Do all LEDs light? Even brightness?
• Check power supply: no burning smell, no overheating.
• Test sensors: paper sensor, home position sensor, height sensor (UV flatbed).
Red flag: Error messages on boot, unresponsive panel, LEDs not lighting, burning smell.
Checklist Point 5: Actual Print Quality
How to check:
• Print a test image with: solid color blocks (CMYK + white), text (small and large), gradients, fine lines, photo image.
• Examine for: banding (horizontal lines), misalignment (colors not overlapping), color shifts, missing details, ink droplets/splatters, uneven white coverage.
• Print on the material you plan to use (not just paper).
• For DTF: print + press a transfer, check wash fastness (if possible).
• For UV: print on your target material, check adhesion (tape test).
• Compare to a known-good print if possible.
Red flag: Visible banding, severe misalignment, colors way off, poor detail.
Checklist Point 6: Maintenance History and Usage
Ask the seller:
• How old is the machine? (Purchase date)
• How many hours/m2 has it printed?
• What was it used for? (Production? Hobby? Demo?)
• How often was maintenance performed? (Weekly? Monthly? Rarely?)
• Has the print head been replaced? When?
• Have any parts been replaced? (Head, dampers, cap station, belts, motors)
• Why are you selling it? (Upgrading? Closing business? Machine has issues?)
• Is there any remaining warranty?
• Do you have maintenance records/receipts?
Red flag: Seller doesn't know maintenance history, vague answers, "it was working fine when I stored it" (stored printers often have clogged heads).
