Sublimation Temperature & Pressure Chart for 15 Common Fabrics
Sublimation print comes out faded, dull, or washes off after the first wash? 90% of sublimation failures come from wrong temperature, time, or pressure settings. Every fabric and material requires different heat press settings. Use this chart as your quick reference to get vibrant, long-lasting sublimation prints every time.
How Sublimation Works
Sublimation printing uses special dye-sub ink that turns from solid to gas when heated (without becoming liquid). The gas bonds with polyester fibers or polymer coatings, becoming part of the material rather than sitting on top.
For successful sublimation, you need:
1. Temperature: High enough to turn ink to gas (usually 180-210°C / 356-410°F)
2. Time: Long enough for gas to penetrate fibers (30-120 seconds depending on material)
3. Pressure: Even pressure ensures consistent transfer (light, medium, or firm)
4. Compatible material: Must contain polyester or have polymer coating

Detailed Instructions by Material Category
1. Polyester T-Shirts and Apparel (Most Common)
Settings:
• Temperature: 195-205°C (383-401°F)
• Time: 45-60 seconds
• Pressure: Medium (you should feel resistance when closing press)
• Peel: Hot peel (peel transfer paper immediately after pressing)
Procedure:
1. Pre-press garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles
2. Place transfer paper face down on garment, printed side touching fabric
3. Use heat tape to secure paper (prevents shifting)
4. Press at 200°C for 50 seconds with medium pressure
5. Open press, peel paper immediately while hot
6. Let garment cool before folding
Tips:
• 100% polyester gives the brightest, most vibrant colors
• 50/50 blends work but colors will be slightly less vibrant
• Do not use more than 65% cotton — cotton does not sublimate, print will wash out
• For dark polyester, use "sublimation on dark" paper or consider DTF instead
2. Spandex and Stretch Fabrics
Settings:
• Temperature: 175-185°C (347-365°F)
• Time: 35-45 seconds
• Pressure: Light to medium
• Peel: Hot peel
Why lower temperature?
Spandex (elastane) fibers degrade at temperatures above 190°C. The fabric will lose stretch and become brittle. Always test a scrap first.
Tips:
• Use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper to protect the fabric
• Do not over-press — spandex can show press marks
• Let cool completely before stretching
3. Nylon
Settings:
• Temperature: 175-185°C (347-365°F)
• Time: 30-40 seconds
• Pressure: Light
• Peel: Hot peel
Why lower settings?
Nylon melts at approximately 190°C. High heat causes shiny spots, melting, and fabric damage.
Tips:
• Nylon requires special sublimation ink (low-temp formula) for best results
• Test on a hidden area first
• Some nylons have water-resistant coatings that prevent sublimation — test first
4. Ceramic Mugs
Settings (mug press):
• Temperature: 190-200°C (374-392°F)
• Time: 180-240 seconds (3-4 minutes)
• Pressure: Firm (adjust mug press so mug fits snugly)
• Peel: Let cool 1-2 minutes, then peel
Settings (oven method):
• Temperature: 180°C (356°F)
• Time: 10-15 minutes
• Wrap mug in silicone wrap or use shrink wrap
• Rotate halfway for even heating
Tips:
• Mugs must be "sublimation-ready" or "polymer-coated"
• Regular ceramic mugs will not work — ink will not bond
• Use heat-resistant tape to secure transfer tightly
• Let mug cool completely before washing (wait 24 hours for first wash)
5. Aluminum and Metal Panels
Settings:
• Temperature: 195-205°C (383-401°F)
• Time: 60-90 seconds
• Pressure: Medium to firm
• Peel: Hot peel
Tips:
• Metal must have sublimation coating (white or silver polymer coating)
• Bare aluminum will not sublimate
• Use a foam pad or felt pad under metal for even pressure
• Metal heats and cools quickly — handle with care
• For double-sided printing, let one side cool completely before pressing the other
6. Acrylic
Settings:
• Temperature: 175-185°C (347-365°F)
• Time: 60-90 seconds
• Pressure: Light
• Peel: Hot peel
Why lower settings?
Acrylic (PMMA) softens at 90°C and can warp or melt at high heat. Use light pressure to avoid embossing the acrylic surface.
Tips:
• Acrylic must be sublimation-coated
• Use a foam pad to distribute pressure evenly
• Place acrylic between two sheets of parchment paper
• Let cool flat under weight to prevent warping
Common Sublimation Problems and Fixes

Pre-Press and Post-Press Best Practices
Pre-Press (Critical for Fabric)
• Always pre-press fabric for 3-5 seconds before applying transfer
• This removes moisture, wrinkles, and fabric sizing
• Moisture is the #1 cause of faded sublimation prints
• Pre-press until fabric is completely dry to touch
Post-Press
• For fabric: peel hot, then let cool flat
• For hard goods (mugs, metal): let cool completely before handling
• Wait 24 hours before first wash for all sublimated items
• Wash in cold water, mild detergent, no bleach
• Dry on low heat or hang dry
Pressure Guide
How to determine correct pressure:
- Light pressure: Press handle closes easily with one finger. Used for delicate fabrics (spandex, nylon) and acrylic.
- Medium pressure: Press handle requires firm push with one hand. Used for most polyester fabrics, mouse pads, metal.
- Firm pressure: Press handle requires both hands or significant force. Used for mugs (in mug press) and thick materials.
