UV Flatbed Printer Coating Guide: Which Coating for Which Material
Printed a beautiful design on glass or metal, only to watch it scratch off with a fingernail? 90% of UV printing adhesion problems come from using the wrong coating or applying it incorrectly. Why Coating Is Necessary
UV ink cures by UV light, but it does not chemically bond to every surface. Porous materials like wood and MDF absorb ink naturally. Non-porous materials like glass, metal, and acrylic have smooth surfaces that UV ink cannot grip. Coating creates a micro-rough surface that the ink can anchor to.
Without coating:
• Prints scratch off easily on glass and metal
• Ink beads up on glossy surfaces
• Colors appear dull and washed out
• Print washes off with water or alcohol
Coating Types and Their Uses
1. Universal UV Coating (Multi-Purpose)
- Best for: Acrylic, PVC, ABS, most plastics
- Appearance: Clear, matte or glossy finish options
- Drying time: 5-15 minutes air dry, or 30 seconds with heat gun
- Coverage: 10-15ml per square meter
- Shelf life: 12 months unopened, 3 months after opening
2. Metal Coating
- Best for: Aluminum, stainless steel, tin, galvanized metal
- Key feature: Contains adhesion promoters specifically for metal surfaces
- Drying time: 15-30 minutes air dry
- Important: Metal must be completely free of oil and grease before coating
3. Glass Coating
- Best for: Glass bottles, mirrors, glass panels, ceramic
- Key feature: Silane-based formula that bonds to silica surfaces
- Drying time: 20-40 minutes air dry, or 2 minutes at 60°C
- Important: Glass coating requires thorough surface cleaning with alcohol first
4. Wood Coating
- Best for: MDF, plywood, solid wood, bamboo
- Key feature: Seals wood pores to prevent ink absorption and color change
- Drying time: 10-20 minutes
- Note: Some porous woods may need 2 coats for best results
5. Leather Coating
- Best for: Genuine leather, PU leather, synthetic leather
- Key feature: Flexible formula that moves with the material without cracking
- Drying time: 10-15 minutes
- Important: Test on a small hidden area first, as some leathers react differently
6. Silicone Coating
- Best for: Silicone phone cases, silicone wristbands, silicone kitchenware
- Key feature: Special primer for silicone, which is extremely difficult to print on
- Drying time: 30-60 minutes, may require heat activation
- Note: Silicone is the hardest material for UV printing; always test first
Step-by-Step Coating Application
Step 1: Surface Preparation
This step determines 70% of coating success.
1. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol (90%+ concentration)
2. Wipe with a lint-free microfiber cloth
3. For metal: use a degreaser first, then alcohol
4. For glass: use glass cleaner, then alcohol, then a final wipe with distilled water
5. Let surface dry completely (1-2 minutes)
6. Never touch the printing area with bare fingers after cleaning — oil from skin ruins adhesion
Step 2: Apply Coating
Method A: Spray Gun (Best for Production)
• Use a 0.5-0.8mm nozzle airbrush or spray gun
• Dilute coating with recommended thinner if required (check product label)
• Hold gun 15-20cm from surface
• Apply in smooth, even passes, overlapping 50%
• One thin coat is better than one thick coat (thick coating causes cracking)
Method B: Wipe-On (Best for Small Items or Beginners)
• Pour a small amount of coating onto a lint-free cloth
• Wipe evenly across the surface in one direction
• Immediately wipe off excess with a clean, dry cloth
• This method uses less coating and is harder to over-apply
Method C: Dip Coating (Best for Small 3D Items)
• Dilute coating to recommended ratio
• Dip item completely and pull out slowly
• Let excess drip off
• Hang to dry
Step 3: Drying
• Air dry for the recommended time (see coating types above)
• Can use a heat gun on low setting (30-40cm distance) to speed up
• Do not print while coating is still tacky — ink will smudge
• Coating is ready when surface feels completely dry to touch
Step 4: Print
1. Place coated item on the printer bed
2. Set print height with 1.5-2mm gap between head and surface
3. Print with standard UV settings
4. After printing, let UV ink fully cure (most printers cure instantly, but thick ink layers may need extra UV exposure)

Common Coating Mistakes
1. Too thick coating. Causes cracking, orange peel texture, and ink adhesion failure. Always apply thin, even coats.
2. Not cleaning surface first. Dust, oil, and release agents prevent coating from bonding. Clean twice if unsure.
3. Printing before coating dries. Wet coating dissolves UV ink and causes smudging. Always verify dryness.
4. Using wrong coating type. Universal coating on glass will scratch off. Match coating to material.
5. Expired coating. Coating older than 3 months after opening loses adhesion properties. Check expiration dates.
6. Touching coated surface. Finger oil creates spots where ink will not adhere. Handle items by edges only.
Adhesion Test (Do This for Every New Material)
After printing and curing, perform these tests:
1. Tape test: Apply strong tape (3M Scotch tape) to printed area, press firmly, peel quickly. If ink comes off, adhesion is poor.
2. Scratch test: Scrape with a fingernail or coin. If ink scratches off, need more coating or better surface prep.
3. Rubbing alcohol test: Rub with alcohol-soaked cloth 20 times. If ink dissolves, curing or coating is insufficient.
4. Water test: Submerge in water for 24 hours. If ink lifts, coating is not waterproof enough.
