Print Head Deep Clean: Procedure for XP600/TX800/I3200
Standard cleaning cycles not fixing missing nozzles? Before spending $80-$300 on a new head, try a deep clean. A proper deep clean recovers 60-70% of clogged heads. This guide covers XP600, TX800, and I3200 print heads.
When to Deep Clean (and When NOT To)
Deep clean when: 3+ standard cleans don't restore nozzles; 20%+ nozzles missing consistently; printer idle 2+ weeks; ink buildup on cap/wiper.
Do NOT deep clean when: only 1-5 nozzles missing (standard clean usually fixes); head physically damaged (scratches, dents, ink leaking); already deep cleaned 2+ times with no improvement; printer under warranty (may void warranty).
Materials Needed
Print head cleaning solution (correct type for your ink), 10ml syringe with rubber tube adapter, foam swabs (lint-free), plastic pipette, microfiber cloth, gloves, paper towels, shallow dish, plastic wrap.
Pre-Cleaning Preparation
1. Move head to center (use printer utility or power off and gently push carriage).
2. Place paper towels under head area.
3. Put on gloves.
4. Have all materials ready.
5. Do NOT power on while head is disassembled.
Method 1: Cap Station Soak (Easiest, Try First)
1. Fill cap station with 2-3ml cleaning solution.
2. Gently move head to park position (over cap).
3. Soak 15-30 min. Severe clogs: 1-2 hours.
4. Move head to center. Run 2 standard cleans with 5-min wait.
5. Print nozzle check. If improved: repeat soak once more.
6. If no improvement: move to Method 2.
Tips: DTF white ink: use warm solution (30-40°C). UV ink: 30-60 min soak. Do not let solution dry — cover with plastic wrap if >30 min.
Method 2: Syringe Flush (Most Effective)
Step 1: Access the damper. The damper is the small filter/ink reservoir near the head on the carriage. Each color has its own damper. Identify clogged channel(s) from nozzle check.
Step 2: Disconnect ink tube. Gently pull tube off damper inlet. Have paper towel ready. Note which tube goes where (take photo).
Step 3: Attach syringe. Fill syringe with 3-5ml cleaning solution. Attach to damper inlet (use rubber tube adapter for seal).
Step 4: Flush gently — MOST IMPORTANT STEP. Push solution VERY GENTLY. You should feel slight resistance, then solution drips from nozzle plate. If strong resistance: STOP. Do not force — excessive pressure cracks head manifold or blows out nozzle plates. Push 2-3ml per clogged channel. If no solution comes out: move to Method 3.
Step 5: Reconnect and clean. Reconnect ink tube. Run 2-3 standard cleans with 5-min waits. Wait 10 min. Print nozzle check. If improved but not perfect: repeat once.
Warning: If solution comes out the TOP of the head (around data cable), stop immediately — you over-pressurized and may have damaged the head.
Method 3: Head Removal and Soak (Last Resort)
Only if Methods 1 and 2 failed, and you are comfortable with disassembly.
Step 1: Remove head. Power off, unplug. Disconnect data cable and ink tubes/dampers. Remove screws (2-4). Lift head straight up, do not tilt. Place nozzle-side up on clean paper towel.
Step 2: Prepare soak. Pour 2-3mm cleaning solution into shallow dish. Place head nozzle-side DOWN. CRITICAL: Only nozzle plate touches solution. Do NOT submerge head body or electronics.
Step 3: Soak. Cover with plastic wrap. Soak 2-4 hours (moderate) or overnight 8-12 hours (severe). UV ink: 12-24 hours.
Step 4: Remove and rinse. Blot nozzle plate with lint-free cloth (do NOT rub). Clean edges with foam swab. Do NOT touch nozzle surface.
Step 5: Reinstall and test. Reinstall head. Run 3-4 cleans with 5-min waits. Wait 15 min. Print nozzle check. If nozzles return: print test image. If still missing: head may be permanently damaged.
Post-Deep Clean Procedure
Print nozzle check (verify all channels). Print solid color blocks (verify even coverage). Print test image with text/fine lines (verify sharpness). If colors off: run 1-2 more cleans, wait 10 min. Record in maintenance log. Monitor daily for 3 days (clogs sometimes return).

When to Replace the Head
Replace if ALL true: cap soak failed; syringe flush failed; head soak failed; consistent missing nozzles in same pattern (physical damage); you see ink leaking from head body, cracked nozzle plate, burnt smell, or head overheats.
Replacement costs: XP600 $80-$150, TX800 $100-$200, I3200 $150-$300, DX5/DX7 $200-$400.
